Oil Painting
Our popular Oil Painting course is back with a fresh new approach, led by our Director, Eleanor McColl.
Through working on a series of three paintings - a Still Life, a Portrait and a Landscape - students will practise a number of different techniques and discover new ways of working. The different techniques may include: the Renaissance method of building up layers of colour using glazes; dry-brush blending to achieve the soft-focus effects of the Renoir and Rubens; or the more modern, expressive style of using a palette knife to bring a completely different energy to a painting.

The study of compositional methods such as the ‘Golden Section’ will help everyone understand how to craft a compelling picture and there will also be demonstrations on how to achieve certain textural effects and ways to mix colour to create depth and atmosphere in a painting.
By producing three different studies, there is a real chance to observe, apply and hone these varied techniques as each painting brings a new challenge.
This course is a fantastic way to get a good grounding in the medium of Oil and we welcome everyone, from beginners to established artists. There’s always something new to discover!
