An introduction to watercolour painting for beginners or novice artists who would like to be able to develop confidence in this exquisite medium that is so popular for its delightful effects of depth, texture and light and for its portability - paint box, brush and paper and away you go!

Through carefully structured sessions students will be guided through the groundwork of the basic materials and methods of watercolour painting including the basic palette, brushes, and painting surfaces; the excitement of colour mixing, making colour combinations, the dramatic effect of washes and understanding the use of transparent and opaque colour.

The work of watercolour masters like J.M.W. Turner, Albrecht Durer, John Constable, and Philip Wilson Steer will form reference points throughout the course for discussion, inspiration and learning about different techniques and we will ’brush’ across the history of watercolour to give more background.

Each workshop will involve picture preparation, sketching and composition followed by step -by- step painting instruction with plenty of opportunity for participants to practice and produce their own work. At the end of the course participants will be invited to choose from their course portfolio a picture of their own to have framed and exhibit in the studio.*

All course students will have their own watercolour starter pack of paint palette/box with a selection of essential colours, brushes and a watercolour paper pad.
