This six-week course will give you an introduction to clay as a material, starting with the basics of how to prepare it for working. You will learn how to make a simple pinch pot, plus how to use soft slabs to form simple shapes like plates and vases.  You will also learn two decorative techniques: burnishing (polishing) and scraffitto (scratching through coloured clay layers).

During the six weeks, you can expect to make some of the following: small bowls (e.g. for peanuts, olives); a vase; a simple teapot with cups; some simple plates; varied sculptural pieces.

Zoë Coughlan
Zoë has been practicing ceramics for over six years. Although she started working on the wheel, in recent years she has gone ‘back to basics’ by developing her hand-building skills, and has found it just as challenging and interesting. Like many others, she finds the making process fascinating, as it involves all the four elements: earth, water, fire and air. Working in clay has such an ancient history, and yet is a vibrant contemporary art form.

She’s currently pursuing a BA in Fine Art, majoring in ceramics, at the Hong Kong Art School and RMIT Melbourne.
